Brakes almost always tell you before they fail. The trick is knowing which noise means "book it in soon" and which one means "stop driving it."

- A high squeal that comes and goes, worse in the morning. Usually the wear indicator, a small metal tab designed to touch the rotor and make exactly that noise when the pad gets thin. It is doing its job. Get it looked at in the next week or two, not the next month.
- A steady grinding you can feel in the pedal. That is usually pad backing plate on rotor, meaning the friction material is gone. This one is not a "next week" job. Grinding turns a pad-and-rotor job into a caliper job quickly, and it costs more the longer it runs.
- The pedal pulses or the wheel shakes when you brake from speed. Normally rotor thickness variation, often called warping. Machining or replacement depending on how much material is left.
- The pedal feels soft, spongy, or sinks slowly while you hold it. Air in the lines, a fluid leak, or a failing master cylinder. Do not put this one off. A pedal that sinks under steady pressure is a hydraulic problem, not a wear problem.
- The car pulls to one side when you brake. Often a sticking caliper or collapsed flexible hose on the opposite side. Worth checking alignment at the same time, because the two get confused with each other constantly.
- A hot metallic smell after a hill. A caliper or parking brake dragging. Ignore it and you can cook the fluid, which is how a pedal goes to the floor at the bottom of a hill.
- A red or amber warning light. Red is usually the parking brake or a low fluid level and means stop and check. Amber is normally ABS, which does not disable your brakes but does mean the anti-lock function is offline.
What actually gets done
A brake job is not one job. On an inspection the wheels come off and each corner gets measured: remaining pad thickness in millimetres, rotor thickness against the manufacturer's discard spec, and a look at the flexible hoses, the caliper slides and the fluid condition.
What comes back is usually one of four answers. There is plenty of life left and you are hearing something else. The pads are low but the rotors are within spec, so pads and hardware. The rotors are under spec or badly scored, so pads and rotors together. Or something hydraulic has failed and the job changes shape entirely.
Fluid matters more than most people expect. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, which lowers its boiling point, and boiled fluid is compressible in a way fresh fluid is not. That is the mechanism behind a pedal that feels fine in town and worryingly long after a long descent.
Pads and rotors, plainly
Pads are the wear item and are meant to be replaced. Rotors can sometimes be machined flat again if they have enough thickness left, but modern rotors are often thin enough from the factory that replacement is the only honest answer. A shop that machines a rotor already at its discard spec is storing up a comeback.
Why the noise sometimes goes away
Light surface rust after a wet night will squeal for the first few stops and then clear. That is normal and not a fault. A noise that clears in the first mile and stays gone is different from a noise that is there every time you slow down.
