Wheel alignment in Schenectady
Alignment is named directly in Mason's Google reviews, and it is the cheapest way to stop destroying tires you have already paid for.
(518) 347-1229What you are noticing
- The car drifts to one side on a flat, straight road. Test it somewhere genuinely level. Most roads are crowned to shed water and will pull you gently right no matter what.
- The steering wheel sits crooked while you are going straight. Very common after someone replaced a steering or suspension part without aligning afterwards.
- One edge of a tire is wearing much faster than the rest. Inside edge wear in particular is a camber or toe problem and it will eat a new tire in a season.
- A feathered edge you can feel running your hand across the tread. Smooth one way, sharp the other, which is a toe problem specifically.
- It got worse right after a pothole. Broadway in March is a good reason to have it checked. A hard enough hit can move an alignment setting or bend a component outright.
- New tires were just fitted. Worth checking then rather than discovering the problem when the new set is already worn.
The three angles, without the jargon
Toe is whether the wheels point slightly toward or away from each other seen from above. It is the setting that destroys tires fastest when it is wrong, and it is the one most often knocked out by potholes and kerbs.
Camber is the tilt of the wheel seen from the front. Too much either way wears one edge of the tread and nothing else.
Caster is the tilt of the steering axis seen from the side. It mostly affects how the car tracks straight and how positively the wheel returns to centre after a turn.
Not every vehicle is adjustable in all three from the factory. Some need an aftermarket kit to bring camber back into range, and a shop should tell you that before starting rather than after.
Why it needs measuring rather than eyeballing
These are fractions of a degree. Nobody can see them, and a car that tracks perfectly straight can still be out enough to wear a tire visibly within a few thousand miles. The machine prints before and after numbers, and you should be shown both.
What alignment cannot fix
If a wheel bearing, ball joint or tie rod end has play in it, aligning the car is money wasted. The settings will not hold. Worn parts get replaced first, then it gets aligned, in that order.
